Do MPS save money? Let's investigate.
How do MPS work?
MPS are facilitated by key software applications that fall into one of the following categories:
The MPS provider requires software to be installed on the your computers to assess your printer and page-output requirements. Next, the MPS provider offers different models of printers and a cost per monochrome (black only) prints and color prints.
Once an agreement has been signed, you pay a monthly fee which covers the printer, technical support, and servicing. Afterwards, you are charged based on how many monochrome and color prints you have printed (based on the software) and for the replacement ink/toner cartridges.
What are the downsides?
Many MPS contracts hide extra costs and fees that strongly affect the overall cost of a MPS agreement.
The fine print of many MPS contacts specifies that all replacement printer ink and toner cartridges must be purchased directly from the MPS provider. There is a significant mark up on these printer cartridges compared to a regular replacement cost creating a more expensive print option for you, the customer. Included in this mark up are any parts used in repairs for the printers themselves. The MPS provider decides when to replace your ink and toner cartridges and do not typically use the full life of the cartridge. Replacing cartridges prematurely creates extra cost for you, the customer.
Most MPS providers reserve the right to replace old printers with a newer model even if the old one is still working fine. Since the MPS provider sets the price on their leasing your pricing could increase at any time. If your printer runs our of ink or toner, your printing will be interrupted until a maintenance specialist arrives. Rush servicing can result in extra cost.
Aside from the initial set up of a printer and some minor maintenance habits, most printers do not require servicing more than once per year. With an MPS agreement you are paying for a service you are not actively requiring.
Do MPS save money?
Not in particular. The cost to replace your cartridge as you require and perhaps have a printer technician service potential problems as they service is far less expensive than having a MPS agreement.
